The former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George was desperate to find an end to the Irish conflict. He therefore imposed the 'partition' in 1922. Ulster was split into six counties: Fermanagh, Tyrone, Armagh, Down, Antrim and Londonderry now officially called Northern Ireland.

Unionists had blocked plans for the university to be built in Londonderry because this will attract more Catholics to live in Londonderry. Londonderry had a population of more then 70% catholic. So the probable reason was that Unionists tried to keep Catholics from higher education because of the higher amount of Catholics living in Londonderry. Unionists went through measures such as these to keep Protestants at a higher level then Catholics.
