Douglass hoped for the support of his readers to share his "hate [for] the corrupt, slave holding, woman-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of [the southern slave holders]." (71) Obviously this wretched slavery does not exist in today's society, so it would be safe to say that Douglass' ideas most certainly contributed to the cause of abolition.
