As the title describes, this Memoir was written in 1940 but was not published until after the war in 1946. theme in this document appears to be the incompetence of the French military. Bloch concluded that the failure of the French military was due to the lack of ability of the high-ranking Military leaders. This was inspired by Bloch’s personal experiences on the French front and the fall of the entire nation. Through out Strange defeat, it is clear that Bloch attempted to influence the French government and society to adjust to modern policies.
