The time period in which the new male was introduced to the herd was a critical time. The sooner the new male arrived after conception the more likely the mare would loose her foal. The survival rate for the foal was greater when the new male was introduced before or after the foal’s birth. The foal’s chance for survival also increased by being at least one month of age.
