Donalbain had fled, Macbeth, as Duncan's cousin, had the strongest claim.) Ross is on his way to Scone to see him crowned, but Macduff is going home to Fife. Bidding farewell to Ross, Macduff says, "Well, may you see things well done there: adieu! / Lest our old robes sit easier than our new!" (2.4.38). Macduff is wishing everyone well, but also suggesting that they may find that Duncan was a better king than Macbeth will be.
