While the different families in the book seemed distant at times in their thoughts and emotions, they shared many characteristics with one another when thoroughly compared. In the end however, nothing was actually significant enough to alter the path being forged by the mothers and daughters brought together by the game of Mah Jong, and their joy luck club.
