When the element losses or gains eletrons then the formulas also changes. When you lose eletrons you have to make the element a positive ion because the number of protons are greater then the number of eletrons. When you gain eletrons then it is a negative ion because the number of protons are less then the number of eletrons.
There are many more things about ions but that is a basic grade 9 lesson.
