The way these characters show their social and moral status is their reaction to one another as well as the adventure at hand. Huck surpasses Tom because he cares for human beings, especially Jim. Although Tom is considered the most "noble," according to social class, Jim is the most "noble" according to his integrity and morality, and the reader knows it.
