At every encounter, there is almost true insight, but the conversation always falls short, (as do the conversations Henry has with all other characters). With no other character is he as honest, bearing his perplexities and seeking the understanding he so desires. Sadly, Frederic Henry’s machismo prevents him from ever coming to fully appreciate faith, hope, and love.
