It is surprising that he killed Polonius so suddenly without any thought when he has delayed and planned the killing of his true enemy, Claudius, for so long. He is indecisive and has trouble keeping his thoughts and actions on the same level. Also, the fact that Gertrude cannot see the ghost makes it possible that Hamlet really is insane and making it up in his head.
