He concludes the novel, fittingly, by applying this to all of mankind – saying that every person deep down would like to repeat the past, and this is what takes us into the future. For humans, memory is selective and a lot of the time, the past is this beautiful thing, where we were so much happier. Deep down most people would like to live it over again, just like Gatsby.
