Any bacteria that escaped the lab would starve without the researchers feeding them the unusual amino acids. Bioethicist Caplan dismisses any charges that the researchers are playing God. He says the scientists are “playing man” and doing what people do best, creating new things. “ There’s nothing wrong, morally, with inventing things,” he adds.
