They were simply in awe, and in wonder of this "green breast" of a new world. Beneath Gatsby's consumption and corruption and freedom, he was in wonder of one thing only. That one thing unfortunately was not a green breast, but a green light, and that is ultimately the tragedy of Jay Gatsby.
