Throughout the novel, the reader sees the lives of Frankenstein and the creature come together. The doppelganger motif shows how closely their lives imitate each other and provide to show each character’s tragic fall. It is the doppelganger motif between Frankenstein and Walton which portrays even more clearly the tragic nature of Frankenstein. Essentially, the doppelganger motif becomes a tool used to magnify the themes and characterizations within the novel Frankenstein.
