Instead offering to help his nephew who has no money, and is in trouble he completely neglects him in favor of his own career and livelihood.
Throughout this novel the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. The masses live in Shantytowns or wherever they can lay their heads while the rich stay in their High Place. Alan Paton whole to bring attention to the lives of the natives were being forced to live.
