Constructivist Approach

Did you know in the 1980's a constructivist approach to learning had become popular with many educators? This approach is based upon the supposition that as learners interact with the world. They construct their own experience and knowledge. Therefore, learning is viewed as the "product of self organization" and the learning process is supported by the two principles: first, knowledge is not passively received, but actively constructed by the learner, and second learners generate understanding …

…This teaching strategy also encourages students to learn from each other. Finally, establishing constructivist classrooms takes practice. If a student, is truly to become active learners then a cpnstructivist approach is not something teachers can pull out occasionally for novelty. Teachers and students have to develop active constructive habits of mind. Constructivism must become part of the classroom culture. The eventual goal is to have students use this active process in reading on their own.
