After preventing the re-establishment of French colonial rule in Vietnam, northern Vietnam, backed by the communist powers and led by Ho Chi Minh, attempted to unify the north and south of Vietnam as one independent country. However, many of the democratic world powers, such as the United States, saw this a communist threat, and, not wanting the creation of a communist Vietnam, supported southern Vietnam.
