For millennia before the nineteenth century, China appeared to be a "master civilization," integrating and ruling millions of square miles, suzerain over other Asian countries, sophisticated, populous and unparalleled in longevity of success. At the core of the General Education program, as at the core of understanding other cultures and international relations must be competent instructors with a vision broader than mandated by a single academic specialization, and, most important, students anxious to carry their thinking and education beyond what is required to pass exams and qualify for degrees.
