Characterization in John Updike’s “A&P”
The short story “A&P” by John Updike, takes place in a grocery store in a small Massachusetts town where conservative social values are monotonous. This use of characterization is very effective in permitting the reader to understand the concepts underlined in the story. It also may provide as extra quirks that the average reader may notice to help illustrate the characters. John Updike receives a cheer for his unique approach to developing characters through items.
