Merchants exchanged goods between Mediterranean, Middle East, and Eastern Asia. Nomadic tribes played a key role in this, but that's chapter V. Slavery was practiced in both Greece and Rome. Both Rome and Greece didn't care all that much about technology, though, putting them at disadvantage with their Asian counterparts. Women and slaves were largely discriminated.
