Although Beneatha seems to be determined and driven toward her goals and dreams, she is actually indecisive about her future and is the weakest link in the family. Beneatha seems to be superior, independent, in control, individualistic, driven and optimistic in a seemingly inopportune life, but her true characteristics are the opposite of her façade.

control, driven, optimistic, superior qualities become just the opposite as the play progresses. In each scene, a new attribute is exposed and Beneatha’s character becomes weaker. The Younger family was able to learn from their mistakes and learn from their experience, yet Beneatha was unable to uncover a moral from their misfortune. She simply found that she had changed and could no longer hold the façades that she had established from the beginning.
