style of John Updike’s short story, is effectively used throughout “A & P.” The chosen styles I described were used often throughout the entire story. Informal diction, concrete words and connotations are used the most and put the scenery in place and the characters in perspective. Overall, some of the sentences are clearly described to the reader and some are described through the use of connotations to help you imagine the setting a little better.
