but towards the end you realize that it is not so. You start to understand the nature of the war and that the main character were extremely lucky to have survived so long, like a quote in the book "No soldier outlives a thousand chances," eventually Paul's friends begin to die. The description in the war scenes is excellent, and the connection that you get to every character makes this book so much more meaningful.
