Lincoln was elected president in November in 1860, and took office March 4, 1861. South Carolina had threatened to secede, if Lincoln won the presidency. Four days after the election, legislature met at Charleston and South Carolina unanimously voted to secede. Six weeks later, six other states followed: Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Four more stated wanted join later.
