John Updike is a writer famous for his short stories, essays, poetry, reviews, articles, art criticism and plays. He was born on March 18, 1932 in Reading PA. During the story he separates him self from the sheep and becomes an individual. He stands up for the girls wearing bathing suits and quits his job because he thinks it is wrong for his manger to embarrass them. Sammy wants to be different and dislikes the values and standards of his time.
