Twelve leaders were sentenced to death, three to life in prison, four were given prison sentences and three were acquitted. This action established an important precedent, that no one could commit such crimes and claim that they were only following their orders. They could be found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and were accountable for their actions even in a time of war.
