Joyce is very clever in the way that he successfully manages to construct the story to make it look like sexual conquests, only for the truth to be revealed as the story comes to a close. Both Lenehan and Corley are proved to be leeches and deceptive, working class gallants. Only at the end of the story do we realise the nature of the title, pure sarcasm.
